Jameel Jaffer is responsible for the litigation of cases relating to censorship, surveillance, discrimination, detention, and due process. His litigation docket includes Doe v. Holder, a challenge to the FBI's "national security letter" authority; Amnesty v. Blair, a challenge to the recently amended Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act; Modamed v. Jeppesen, a civil damages suit brought by victims of the CIA's rendition program against the corporation that facilitated that program; and American Academy of Religion v. Chertoff, a challenge to the government's refusal to grant a visa to Swiss scholar Tariq Ramadan. Mr. Jaffer is also counsel to the plaintiffs in ACLU v. Department of Defense, a lawsuit that has forced the release of more than 100,000 pages of government documents concerning the abuse of prisoners, including the four Bush administration torture memos that were released in April 2009. Mr. Jaffer's book, Administration of Torture (co‐authored with fellow ACLU attorney Amrit Singh), was published by Columbia University Press in 2007. Prior to joining the staff of the ACLU in 2002, Mr. Jaffer served as a law clerk to Hon. Amalya L. Kearse on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and then to Rt. Hon. Beverley McLachlin, Chief Justice of Canada. He is a graduate of Williams College, Cambridge University, and the Harvard Law School.
